Welcome to our Garden Landscaping case study, for a large formal garden in Sudbury, Suffolk. Know for its bucolic charm and 17th-century buildings this garden required careful thought to compliment the area with traditional aesthetics.

Recent Projects in Sudbury - A Formal English Garden

Tour our latest formal garden design and build project in Sudbury by watching the film on the left. A large front garden that required careful design to ensure that it honoured not only its countryside setting but also the 17th-century property. 

The Garden
A large garden untouched for at least 40 years, it lacked functionality and interest. 
Issues
The entire garden was badly sunken and needed levelling requiring for aesthetic and construction reasons. Mature trees surround the site making plant selection challenging including a ceder situated in a very unhelpful position. 
Materials 
180 tones of topsoil, 750 perennials, handcrafted oak posts, handcrafted oak rose arch, limestone paving and setts, pyracantha hedge, Taxus Topiary and a 200 year old wrought iron gate.
Design Solution 
First and foremost a path to the front door was required. My idea was create a practical and cost effective hard standing that draws the eye through the garden toward the front door; this was achieved with limestone setts laid in diamond pattern.
Flanking the path are 6 borders edged with corten steel, Taxus topiary and many herbaceous plants all surrounded by further paths allowing practical access to all areas of the space. The large Ceder of Lebanon was moved creating another focal point from the driveway.

Vertical elements are situated to frame either the portico, sash windows or countryside creating symmetry sympathetic to the architecture of this Georgian house. From inside the property the paths draws the eye through the garden to the beautiful countryside beyond.

We removed a hedge that had seen better days, replacing it with Pyrcathana as this will require little maintenance, be beneficial to wildlife and create both privacy and security.

In the warmer month, the borders will be spectacular, informal containing many flowering plants which can be cut for the house.
